Electric and phone lines constitute a huge network of cables spreading around the world. Equipment that is connected to that network is exposed to all kinds of disturbances and over- and undercurrents. These are usually invoked by atmospheric electric discharges (statistically there are 20 storms a year on average) or all kinds of problems at power plants, hydro plants, and malfunction of various network devices.

In order to protect computer, audio/video equipment, faxes, modems, telephone-exchanges, measuring devices, and other equipment against those disturbances and over- and undercurrents it is necessary to use a protective device that would minimize the risk of damage to this expensive equipment.
